Healthy Living Champions for Change councils

The Healthy Living Champions for Change groups are moving into a new phase for this school year. After learning about unhealthy fats, added sugars and the importance of daily physical activity during the 2009-2010 school year, the group members are now taking action to make changes both on personal and community levels. Each started a Healthy Living Passport to Health which included setting personal healthy lifestyle goals for the year. Nutrition Services will monitor the goals as the year progresses and listen to success stories.

The groups are also taking the East Bay Parks and Recreation Trails Challenge by hiking at least five of the featured trails. During the 2010-2011 school year, the Champions for Change participants also will be teaching cooking demonstrations themselves and taking fieldtrips to local farms and learning more about food systems and how to eat healthier. Nutrition Services is excited about helping the Champions for Change – in over 13 groups with more than 250 participants throughout Alameda County – make changes that lead to living healthy.

Senior Healthy Living Councils

SENIOR HEALTHY LIVING COUNCILS

Nutrition Services’ staff coordinates five Senior Healthy Living Champions for Change groups which meet in senior and recreation centers throughout Oakland and San Leandro. The groups meet monthly and focus on issues relating to health and nutrition. The senior members actively participate in the group by setting healthy living goals for themselves, learn from food demonstrations that focus on healthy food preparation, and contribute to discussions about health. The seniors promote good nutrition and physical activity at their centers and work on making changes in their communities to support healthy changes.
